Kicking off Arabic
Arabic. It's the language I know least - 1%. I'd like to make a start on it. So what can I do in the meantime (during January and the start of February, 2020) before I return home and regain access to my resources?
If getting used to a language is what you do to learn it, then the first thing that I need to get used to with Arabic is its script. Those letters look crazy to me. How do you start to make sense of them?
On my Kindle I happen to have George Orwell's 1984. However, it is a pdf document, and its quality is poor. There aren't enough pixels to do the novel justice.
But if I can't read any Arabic, maybe I could begin by reading about it.
I have access to The World's Major Languages edited by Bernard Comrie (2nd edition, 2008). It has a chapter on Arabic by Alan S. Kaye.
