One school of thought
There's a school of thought - although schools as we know them don't generally know about it - that teachers cannot teach students a language. That no one can. That such a thing is impossible. And that all anyone can do is to help you into that frame of mind where the student applies him or herself to do the doing, and learn the learning.
It's an idea that appeals to me. And yet even this is not quite correct, in my opinion.
A more accurate model (one that 'Khatzumoto', a Kenyan who resides (or resided) in Japan made me aware of) is that one gets used to a language. It just happens by itself, and automatically as long as you get exposed to it enough. With enough enough exposure, you can't help but pick up any language.
This makes sense to me. After all, didn't we all pick up our first language that way?
